Good News about UA Academics, Part 14

Since The University of Alabama was established in 1831, it has been known as the “Capstone” of Higher Learning in the state of Alabama. A capstone is defined as the top stone forming the pinnacle of a structure. Therefore, UA was established by the Constitution of the State of Alabama to be the pinnacle of higher education within its borders. The following are a few “Good News” facts as proof of why UA remains the “Capstone” today.

-According to U.S. News and World Report’s 2003 edition of “Best Graduate Schools”, the University of Alabama School of Law ranked as the 47th best Law School in the nation. This is the fourth consecutive year that UA has been ranked in the top-tier of Law Schools. Also, The University of Alabama School of Medicine ranked as the 28th best Medical School in the nation for Research and the 30th best Medical School for Primary Care.

-The University of Alabama finished 8th in the nation in the latest annual Hearst Intercollegiate Broadcast News Competition. The UA broadcast news competition team has finished in the top 10 nationally in seven of the last eight years.

-With two University of Alabama students named to the 2002 USA Today All-USA College Academic team, UA finished 4th in the nation and 1st in state in the number of students named to this years team. Hardvard University and the U.S. Naval Academy had four students each represented and Northwestern University had three. Congratulations to Sarah Adair, a microbiology major, and Thomas Lee, a mechanical engineering graduate, for your success and representing The University of Alabama well.

-University of Alabama graduate, Joe Brown of Conyers, GA, recently received the prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship to begin study in the 2002-2003 academic year at Cambridge University in England. Scholars must demonstrate outstanding academic merit and leadership potential and must be committed to serving their communities and using the benefits of higher education for the common good. Brown received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from UA in December 2001. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship program is in its inaugural year and was established by the Bill and Melinda Gates Scholarship Committee.

-The University of Alabama’s debate team finished 2nd in the nation at the 2002 Delta Sigma Rho/ Tau Kappa Alpha National Tournament held March 15-18 in Gainesville, FL. The high finish continues UA’s tradition of having one of the top debate programs in the nation. Congratulations to all members of this year’s team for continuing to make your university proud. The University of Alabama’s debate teams have won 14 National Titles.
