Onward and Upward
This
begins the fifth year of a continuing series of Good News FACTS about
academics at the Capstone!!! As UA builds for the future on a strong
foundation, the best is yet to come. Moving onward and upward, many
exciting changes are occurring on campus that will help vault The
University of Alabama to the next level. The following are some current
success stories. Enjoy!!! -Again, the 2004 edition of U.S.
News and World Report has ranked The University of Alabama one of the
top 50 Public Universities in the Nation. UA ranks #48, finishing 1st
in the state in the academic reputation score (3.04), academic quality
of entering freshmen (percent of freshmen finishing in the top 10%,
25%, and 50% of their high school class), average ACT score of entering
freshmen, freshmen retention rate, faculty resources rank, class size
(highest percent of classes under 20 students and lowest percent of
classes over 50 students), and alumni giving rate. UA ranks in the
second tier of National Universities (Public and Private). Two SEC
schools made the first tier (1-50), Vanderbilt University and The
University of Florida. Six SEC schools made the second tier (51-126),
The University of Alabama, The University of Georgia, The University of
South Carolina, The University of Tennessee, Auburn University, and The
University of Kentucky. The undergraduate business school at UA
continues to be ranked in the top tier of business schools, ranking #53
in America (#33 among Public Universities). The accounting program,
within the business school, ranked #25 in America (#18 among Public
Universities). Also, the undergraduate engineering school is ranked #84
in this year�s edition (#50 among Public Universities).
-Once
again, the �2004 Fiske�s Guide to Colleges�, 20th edition, has rated
The University of Alabama as the top university in the state in their
academics rating. -For the fourth straight year, the 2004 edition
of The Princeton Review�s �Best 351 Colleges in America� has ranked The
University of Alabama as the top academic university in the state with
the highest score in its academics rating. -The Institute of
Industrial Engineering has awarded two University of Alabama students
top honors in its 2003 IIE Student Award for Excellence.
Congratulations to Tonita Romero and Kayla Erwin for placing second and
third place, respectively. The international award was established to
recognize undergraduate IE students who have distinguished themselves
through excellence of scholarship and campus leadership. As a testament
to its excellent Industrial Engineering program, UA has consistently
placed students in the top three since 1997. -Three University of
Alabama faculty/staff members are among those selected for 2003-2004
Fulbright Scholar awards. Congratulations to Dr. Richard Lomax,
professor of education and applied statistics, Dr. Marilyn
Emplaincourt, associate director of Capstone International Programs,
and Dr. Subha Chakraborti, professor of statistics, for your
achievements. Established in 1946, under legislation created by the
late Sen. J. William Fulbright, this prestigious programs purpose is to
build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and
other countries. Previous ACADEMIC UPDATES (Parts 13, 14, 16, 17
and 19) revealed several UA alumni who are successful leaders in
today's business world. The following are six more success stories. *Van L. Richey, President and CEO of American Cast Iron and Pipe Company *James H. Nelems, CEO of The Marketing Workshop *Lawrence R. Tate, President and CEO of Alamerica BanCorp *James C. Kennemer, President of Vision Research Corp. and Maxis Information Systems, Inc. *Dennis L. Baxendale, CEO of ELTECH Systems Corporation *Leroy McAbee, Sr., CEO and founder of McAbee Construction, Inc. As
you can see, good things are continuing to happen at The University of
