The short answer is that there shouldn't have been a drop in quality. One of the guys tested one game every-which-way before they went to the one-disk compression and found no discernible difference. There is the slight caveat that the "test game" was from a VHS master whereas the games this last season were digital throughout.
Unfortunately, once the master DVD is made, they delete the gigabytes of captured data out of sheer space considerations. So - going back to 2 disks will be impossible other than taking a VHS master....
They are going to explore a little further
