Good News about UA Academics, Part 12

Excellent planning and hard work are the foundation for success. Smart planning equals excellent planning and makes hard work pay off. Winning "the right way" is always preceded by these actions and sustaining success is a continuous process of these actions. The University of Alabama has been producing a high quality product for many many years. The following are some current examples of UA's successes. Enjoy!!!

-Cornelius Carter, an associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences at UA, has been named 2001 U.S. Professor of the Year by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The award is recognized as one of the nation's most prestigious honoring professors. Carter is the only teacher from an Alabama university ever selected for the award.

-The College of Communication and Information Sciences at UA has been ranked in the top 20 in the nation out of 450 colleges in a study by the Freedom Forum's Media Studies Center. A recent accreditation team called the College "a tier-one program in every respect." Also, the Broadcast Journalism program has been ranked 2nd in the nation this year.

-Monica Moss, a biology major within the College of Arts and Sciences, was one of only 80 recipients nationwide to receive the prestigious Morris K. Udall Foundation Scholarship. The foundation was established by the U.S. Congress in 1992. Udall Scholarships are awarded to outstanding students in fields related to the environment. In addition to her numerous academic honors at UA, Moss was a 2001 Truman Scholarship finalist and is vice president of the UA/Tuscaloosa chapter of the Alabama Environmental Council.

-The University of Alabama is one of the top four public flagship universities in the southeast in enrollment of African-American students.

-Dr. Sharon Beatty, professor of marketing in the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration at UA, has received the prestigious Distinguished Scholar Award presented by the Society for Marketing Advances. The award commends Beatty for "substantive and sustained scholarly contributions to marketing thought and practice."

-The College of Communication and Information Sciences is ranked sixth in the nation in telecommunication and media studies research, according to the Association for Communication Administration.

-The University of Alabama School of Law has built a long-standing reputation of competing well nationally as one of the top Law Schools in the nation in various competitions. The following examples are no exception. The University of Alabama School of Law’s Moot Court team finished 2nd in the nation at the 52nd Annual National Moot Court Competition, held in November (UA finished 2nd only to Loyola University of New Orleans). In the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers Trail Competition, held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the University of Alabama team placed 2nd in the nation, finishing a close second (1 point difference) to Temple University School of Law. Also, in the National Institute of Trail Advocacy’s Tournament of Champions, held in Washington, D.C., the UA team finished 5th in the nation.

Becoming successful is challenging enough. But, sustaining success is even more difficult. The University of Alabama's success has been built over a long period of time by many people. The future is bright at UA because of what has been done, what is being done, and what will be done. Here's to the past, present, and future at The University of Alabama.
