The following is just a few “Good News” facts about current UA successes. Enjoy. -The University of Alabama ranks 8th in the nation in the number of alumni who are CEO’s of Forbes 500 companies according to Forbes magazine’s March, 26, 2002 release. The magazine ranks America’s largest public corporations based on sales, profits, assets, and market value. With seven alumni leading Forbes 500 companies, UA also ties for 1st with Vanderbilt University in the number of Forbes 500 CEO’s who are alumni of SEC member institutions. -The University of Alabama ranks 18th in the nation in the number of alumni who are CEO’s of Fortune 500 companies according to Fortune magazines April 15, 2002 issue. Fortune magazine lists America’s largest corporations, but unlike Forbes magazine, does not take into account profits and market value. With four alumni leading Fortune 500 companies, The University of Alabama ranks second only to Vanderbilt University (9 CEO’s) among SEC member institutions. -Under the leadership of UA alumnus Howell Raines, the executive director of The New York Times, the newspaper won seven Pulitzer Prizes this year. Before this year, the largest number any newspaper won in one year was three.
-Two University of Alabama professors have won 2002 John Simon Guggenheim Fellowships. The Guggenheim fellowship is one of the most prestigious honors for academic achievement in the nation. Dr. Gary Taylor and Dr. Mary Reufle are among four professors at UA to have won the award in the last five years, all from the Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences. The award, established in 1925, is granted to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. -Dr. Joe Phelps, professor of advertising and public relations at The University of Alabama, has been named 2003 president-elect of the American Academy of Advertising (AAA). The AAA is an organization of advertising scholars with more than 700 members worldwide. Phelps becomes the first University of Alabama faculty member to serve in this position. -Currently, the Southeastern Conference sponsors and holds championships in 20 intercollegiate sports. Athletes in these sports are eligible for Academic All-SEC awards for achieving excellence in the classroom. For the 2001-2002 scholastic year, The University of Alabama finished fourth among SEC member institutions in the number of athletes named Academic All-SEC in these sports. As you can see, The University of Alabama continues to rank high among the conference and the nation in academic excellence.
