HOW GOOD IS IT? |
For the first time since the class of '94, Alabama has signed the maximum
number of prospects allowed by the NCAA. The Tide in fact signed one more
than that maximum, expecting Marlon Davis to begin his career at a JUCO.
Okay, so it's a full class. But how good is it? In state the Tide landed nine of the top 15 players: RBs Antoneyo Williams and Adam Cox, OL Michael Barfield, DL Larry Paul and Joe Yount, LBs Chris Wheeler and Carlton Person, and DBs Kecalf Bailey and Tony Dixon. Out of state Alabama had it’s best year in recent history. In Georgia the Tide reeled in three All-State players in DB Chris Horne of Sandersville Washington County, TE Marlon Davis of Eastman Dodge County, and two-way lineman Shawn Williams of Augusta Josey. In Tennessee the Tide got Oak Ridge RB Shaun Bohanon, judged by some to be his state’s top prospect, and his teammate WR Jason McAddley. In Mississippi, where the Alabama traditionally does very well, the Tide had a few to slip away but landed the state's biggest catch. On February 20, after wavering between Alabama and Florida for weeks, All-American DL Kenny Smith chose the Tide. In Florida the Tide had unprecedented success. DL Sam Matthews and LB Travis Carroll of Jacksonville Bolles were two of their state's top five players. Another Bolles star, DB Chris Reier, rejected the national champion Gators to play for Bama. OL William Cuthbert of Ft. Pierce Central was heavily pursued by FSU. Prior to a knee injury QB/LB Andrew Zow of Lake Butler Union County was ranked among the state’s top 10 players. Recruiting experts generally agree that this Alabama class rates among the top 10 in the country and in the top two or three in the SEC. What do you think? |
