Recruiting Recap

WHAT'S IN A NUMBER?

So what's the big deal about a wearing a particular number? To some players it's very important.

During his HS playing days at Opp, Mike DuBose dreamed of someday wearing number 54 at Alabama in honor of former Tide star Leroy Jordan. He fulfilled his dream.

Now many members of coach DuBose's first recruiting class at Alabama have their eyes set on a particular number. Just for fun we asked several new Tiders which number they wanted to wear at Alabama. Here's what they said:

Kecalf Bailey

Kecalf wore number 3 at Tuscaloosa Central. DB Michael Feagin currently wears number 3 for Alabama.

Kecalf told us that he originally wanted to wear number 7. Now, he's not so sure. "Jay Barker made that number famous. Then Kevin Jackson came along and wore 7. He made All-American. Now I think I'd rather wear a number that I could make famous for Alabama."

Shaun Bohanon

Shaun wore number 10 at Oak Ridge. DB Thomas Hill currently wears 10 for the Tide.

Shaun told Tider Insider, "Coach DuBose said he'd see about number 10 for me. If not, I asked him if I could wear 28."

Travis Carroll

Travis wore number 44 at Bolles. That number is available at Alabama.

Travis had told Tider Insider that he had a thing for the number 5. Now he says he's decided to wear 44 at Alabama.

Tony Dixon

Tony wore 24 at Pickens Co. That number is available.

During the recruiting process Tony told us he was checking rosters to see which schools would have 24 available next season. Among the schools he considered, Alabama was the only one with 24 open next season.

Shawn Draper

Shawn wore 35 at Huntsville Butler. With Patrick Hape's departure, Shawn says he'll wear Hape's number 38. He also plans to play Hape's old position --TE.

Chris Horne

Chris was number 11 at Washington Co. Chad Goss, a senior next season, wears that number for the Tide.

Chris says, "I will wear number 1 my freshman season. Then I plan on switching to 11."

Quincy Jackson and Chris Reier

This could get interesting. Quincy wore 20 at East Mississippi JC. Chris wore 2 at Bolles. Both want 7 at Alabama.

We have a suggestion for settling this one. Quincy is a WR. Chris is a DB. In fall drills let them lock up in man coverage. The best two out of three wins.

Sam Matthews

Sam wore 67 at Bolles. He says he’ll wear 95 at Alabama.

Jason McAddley

Jason wore a famous number for a WR. He was number 80 at Oak Ridge. He says he'll wear 80 at Alabama. Let's hope he's half as good as the most famous WR to ever wear number 80 -- Jerry Rice.

Carlton Person

Carlton wore 21 at North Jackson. He says that Alabama's current number 21, Montoya Madden, is considering a number change and that he, Carlton, wants 21 if Madden does switch.

Carlos Santana Stennis

Santana, as he prefers to be called, was number 51 at Meridian. He says he will wear Laron White's old number (51) at Alabama.

Joe Yount

Joe may have been the only 6'4, 255 DL in America to wear number 1 in HS. He's not sure what number he'll wear at Alabama, but it will not be 1.
