    On The Recruiting Trail …

Third Time a Charm for Bama

Ronnie Cottrell got him once. He got him twice. And the third time was a charm for Alabama.

At Pierce County HS in Blackshear, GA, Kenric Lott was a four-year starter and a two-time All-State selection. He was recruited by, then FSU recruiting coordinator, Ronnie Cottrell. Lott committed to the ‘Noles, but ended up at Jones Community College in Mississippi.

Early last Fall Lott committed to Cottrell and FSU again. But during the Christmas holidays something happened to change his mind.

"Ronnie Cottrell had been recruiting me for four years," Lott says. "When he left Florida State for Alabama, that opened things up for me."

After Cottrell left FSU, Lott contacted the Seminole coaching staff.

"They said they understood that I was close to Coach Cottrell. If I really wanted to follow him, they weren’t going to hold me back."

Lott eventually narrowed his list to Alabama, FSU and South Carolina. He committed to Alabama during his visit to Tuscaloosa on the weekend of January 16th.

"The tradition set Alabama apart. Tuscaloosa is a great town."

    Q&A

TI: We know that Ronnie Cottrell was a big factor in your decision to go to Alabama. Did Alabama recruit you before he came on the scene?

KL: This year all the schools pretty much figured I was headed to Florida State, so they didn’t waste their time recruiting me. When Coach Cottrell switched to Alabama, that’s when they [Alabama] started recruiting me.

TI: Besides Ronnie Cottrell, what did you like about Alabama?

KL: Coach DuBose. I really enjoyed talking to him. He’s just an honest type of person. Also, when I visited Alabama I felt like I was part of the system just being there. It was a good feeling.

TI: Alabama’s had some problems on the offensive line. How do you see yourself helping them solve the problems?

KL: I can go in and give them some immediate help. I think the key is that I’m mature. I’ve played two years beyond the high school level. I know what it takes to prepare myself.

TI: At which position will you help out next season?

KL: I was mostly a tackle in high school and junior college. I’m not sure if I’ll play guard or tackle at Alabama, but I think I’ll be at left tackle.

TI: Are you more comfortable at tackle?

KL: I can play either tackle or guard. But I like the idea of left tackle because I want to be in charge of protecting the quarterback’s backside. I have good footwork and quickness, and that’s what it takes to protect the quarterback’s blindside. I can pull and lead as a guard or a tackle. I’m good at blocking down field.

TI: Anything you need to work on?

FL: I’d like to get a little faster and improve my footwork some. I’m already strong and physical -- that part just comes natural to me. I bench 470 pounds.

TI: When will you report to Tuscaloosa?

KL: I’ll be finished at Jones in May. I’ll go over to Tuscaloosa at the beginning of summer school and start working out.

TI: Do you think Alabama will turn things around?

KL: There are a lot of good guys already there who can turn it around. Then we had a top-five recruiting class this year. So, yeah, I think things are going in the right direction. The main problem last year was the coaching transition. I think everyone will be on the same page this year because everyone knows what to expect.
