POST-SIGNING INTERVIEW
with
ANTONEYO WILLIAMS

(Go to Profile)

Remember early in the recruiting process when it appeared that Antoneyo Williams was leaning to Auburn? Alabama fans were wondering how the Tide could let a big-time player from Tuscaloosa get away

When Antoneyo committed to Alabama, and without even paying Auburn a visit, most of us were surprised, but no one more so, Antoneyo told us, than Auburn coach Terry Bowden.

We spoke to Antoneyo on February 20th.

TI Antoneyo, when we spoke to you back in December you told us that you were leaning to Auburn. Then you committed to Alabama without even visiting Auburn.
AW I really wanted to go to Alabama all along. I was just keeping it a secret.
TI We heard that Terry Bowden came to see you the day after you made your commitment. Can you tell us what he said?
AW He mainly talked to my brother. But coach Bowden told me that he had been recruiting me all year and at least wanted me to come visit Auburn. I thought about it for a minute but decided against it. Coach Bowden was disappointed about it, but I knew I was going to Alabama.
TI Antoneyo you had a great high school career, but there are some critics who question your speed. Are you aware of that criticism?
AW You know, I've heard a lot of people say that. But I run a 4.4. All I can say is just ask coach Busby [Central's head football coach]. I think I'm one of those backs who just doesn't look like I'm moving fast but I am.
TI What are your expectations for next season?
AW I want to play but Alabama has some good backs returning next year so I may redshirt. I feel like I can learn from guys like Dennis Riddle and Shaun Alexander. I think that type of competition will make me better.
TI By the way, did Linnie Patrick [Antoneyo's brother-in-law] have much to say about your decision to go to Alabama?
AW It was kind of funny when I called and told him I was going to Alabama. He just let out a big "Roll Tide!"
