POST-SIGNING INTERVIEW
with
ANDREW ZOW

(Go to Profile)

Alabama fans seemingly can't wait until next year's recruiting class. Bama faithful are anxious because they're hoping to finally get the QB of their dreams -- Pelham's Tyler Watts.

But before we start talking about next year, let's talk about the QB Alabama signed this year.

Andrew Zow is not considered a "blue-chip" QB prospect, not as Tyler Watts will be next year. Most people believe Zow's future will be on defense, where he earned a reputation as one of the top HS prospects in Florida.

Nevertheless, Zow comes to Alabama with some pretty impresssive credentials as a QB. Zow led his Union County HS team to three consecutive state championships. His coach, Robby Pruitt, compares him to former Nebraska star Tommie Frazier, except Pruitt says Zow is a better passer.

We spoke to Andrew Zow on February 15.

TI First of all, did you actually commit to Auburn before deciding on Alabama?
AZ Yes, I did. I committed to them, but I just couldn't get Alabama out of my mind.
TI What was it about Alabama?
AZ They were just in mind the whole time. They had promised me an opportunity to play quarterback from the beginning and that's what I wanted. Auburn said they would give me a shot at quarterback, but they recruited me for defense.
TI Your HS coach has compared you to Tommie Frazier. What do you think about that comparison?
AZ He was a great player who proved himself on the field. It's too early for me to compare myself to him. I'll say that I'm a good passer and runner, but I don't think of myself as a Tommie Frazier at this time. I just don't want to make that comparison.
TI Some people think you will end up on defense at Alabama. Will you be devastated if you're switched to defense?
AZ Oh no, not at all. I just want a shot at quarterback. That's all I ask for. Auburn thought I could play safety for them. South Carolina said they wanted me as an outside linebacker. So if things don't work out at quarterback, I wouldn't be devastated if they moved me. I like defense too.
TI Since you could possibly play on either side of the ball, how are you preparing yourself for next season?
AZ Right now, I'm preparing as a quarterback. My weight was about 215. I've dropped down to around 205. As a quarterback, I think having my weight down some is better. If I switch to defense, I could easily get bigger.
TI By the way, have you had the chance to speak with the three players from Jacksonville Bolles who signed with Alabama? [Zow's hometown, Lake Butler, is only about an hour from Jacksonville.]
AZ I know about them, but I haven't them met in person or spoken to them on the telephone. I know they're supposed to be good players. I'm looking forward to meeting them.
