POST-SIGNING INTERVIEW
|
|
|
|
Shawn Draper is one of the most versatile line prospects that Alabama has signed in several years. In high school he starred at several positions including TE, FB, DE, and LB. At Alabama he'll probably begin at TE, but where he'll end up is harder to predict. Some say guard or center, others say DE or DT. His HS coach, Ron Danley, believes that whatever position Shawn plays, he'll be an impact player. We spoke with Shawn on March 13. |
|
TI | Shawn we've heard that you'll begin at tight end. But we've also heard you could end up at any one of several positions on either side of the ball. Where do you expect to play? |
SD | Alabama recruited me as a tight end so that's fine with me. I have also talked to the Alabama coaches about defense. They said when I get down there we'll see which position I prefer and where I fit in best. We'll go from there. |
TI | You didn't play tight end this past season, but we understand you played the position as a junior. |
SD | Yes sir, I had a pretty good junior season. I was the All-City tight end. I'm a good blocker, I can catch the ball well, and I run well for a guy my size [6'4, 265]. |
TI | Ron Danley, your coach at Butler, told us that your goal is to start next season. |
SD | Well, realistically I'm hoping to be able to go in and play some as a freshman. That's my goal right now. |
TI | Coach Danley also told us that you gave up baseball this spring to get ready for next football season. |
SD | I've been hitting the weights pretty hard since basketball season ended. I really wanted to spend some time in the weight room to get stronger and I've done that. Now I'm kind of wanting to play baseball, but my main goal is to be ready next fall. |
TI | Are you excited about going to Alabama? |
SD | I'm very excited about it. During recruiting I became pretty good friends with Larry Paul. I also met A.J. Diaz and he's a good guy. I'm just looking forward to getting down there. |
