POST-SIGNING INTERVIEW
with
WILLIAM CUTHBERT

(Go to Profile)

When was the last time Alabama went head to head with and beat Florida State for a top prospect in the Seminoles’ home state?

That may seem like a tough one to answer, but it wasn’t that long ago. It was on February 5, 1997. That's when Ft. Pierce OL William Cuthbert signed with Alabama.

We spoke with William on February 20. He told us that it was difficult to turn down FSU, his childhood favorite.

TI William, we understand that Bobby Bowden spent a lot of time trying to convince you to change your commitment from Alabama to Florida State.
WC He spent too much time. When I visited down there coach Bowden kept me in his office 30 to 45 minutes extra trying to get me to go to FSU. Then he talked to my mom quite a while. Then he had the president of the university come meet me.
TI Well, how close did you come to switching?
WC Very close. I mean it was hard for me. On the way home from my visit, all I was doing was thinking about it.
TI What sold you on honoring your commitment to Alabama?
WC I looked at three things.

They both have great tradition. So I considered that even.

I considered the social life on both campuses about even.

It came down to academics. The accounting department at Alabama is one of the best in the nation. It's an awesome accounting program. That's what kept me with Alabama.

TI Did you know because of your hairstyle, you are almost a legend in Alabama already? [See the photo of William on his profile page.]
WC [Laughing] Believe it or not, I cut it off. I told everyone at my school, "On signing day, I'm cutting it all off." They didn't believe I would do it, but I cut it off right after I signed.
TI Let's talk about the future. What are your expectations for next year?
WC I don't mind redshirting if that's what the coaches want. I'm working hard right now, preparing as if I'm going to play. I want to play, but I'm not going to pout if I redshirt.
