PRE-SIGNING INTERVIEW
with
KENNY SMITH

(Go to Profile)

The following interview took place on Tuesday, October 29, 1996.
TI Kenny, there's been some confusion this year regarding your name. There is another Kenny Smith who came out last year. He also happens to be a defensive lineman like you.
KS [Laughing]Yeah, I know. I met the other Kenny Smith a couple of weeks ago. I went to the Alabama-Ole Miss game and he was there. It's a little funny that we play the same position and everything.
TI You said you went to the Alabama-Ole Miss game. How did you like it?
KS That was the first time I've been to a game in Tuscaloosa and I liked it. They have a really good defensive line coach over there. Coach DuBose is known for sending a lot of his players to the NFL and I like that.
TI Do you have a list of schools you're considering?
KS I'm looking at Florida, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Penn State and Alabama.
TI Are those the schools you'll visit?
KS I've already visited several of those schools I mentioned unofficially. I don't think I'll take any official visits to the schools I unofficially visit. I do know I plan on definitely visiting Ohio State and maybe Notre Dame. I want to see as many schools as possible.
TI We understand you may be leaning to Florida?
KS That's right. Presently, Florida is the place I like most. I won't make my decision anytime soon though. My grades are pretty good, but I'm waiting to get the results from my test. I know I won't make a decision before that.
TI Since you are so heavily recruited, have you experienced any pressure?
KS I am a little surprised at some of the negative recruiting that some schools do. One coach told me that unless I was catholic, I wouldn't get much playing time at Notre Dame. That's about the only type of pressure I've gotten so far. My coach [Mac Barnes] has told me to just keep my head clear and don't mislead anyone and everything will be okay.
QUICK FACTS: Kenny says he's 6'5, 295 and runs a 5 flat 40. His HS number is 81. Contrary to other reports, he says he will be eligible.
