Recruiting Recap

PRE-SIGNING INTERVIEW
with
WILLIAM CUTHBERT

(Go to Profile)

The past 15 years Alabama has been known to recruit OL with short arms. While he was still Alabama's DL coach, Mike DuBose suggested for a few year's that the Tide seek out bigger OL with long arms. As a DL coach, DuBose realized that it was those type of OL who were more effective blockers. The past few recruiting classes have included some linemen like Chris Samuels, Jason McDonald and Mookie Moore who fit the description DuBose likes. Now that DuBose is the Tide's head coach, look for that trend to continue. One prospect who fits the mold is Ft. Pierce, FL star OL Willie Cuthbert. Tider Insider spoke to Willie on Saturday, December 21.
TI Willie, tell us which schools you are considering.
WC Alabama, Georgia, FSU and Missouri are my top 4. All have offered me a scholarship already.
TI Any favorite among your list?
WC I like them all. I'm going to give them equal consideration. I'd have to say, though, that FSU and Alabama are my top two.
TI What do you like about each?
WC Florida State was my childhood favorite. They are kind of like the team I grew up with. Alabama has a tradition as good as anyone's. Actually, Alabama and Notre Dame probably have more tradition than any other school in the country.
TI What will you be looking for in a school?
WC I don't mind redshirting if that's what it takes. I will be looking at playing time though. Also, I'm going to want to know how well I like the offensive line coach. That's the guy I'll have to live with the next four or five years.
TI Describe yourself as a player.
WC Well, I'm 6'6, 325 and bench press over 400 pounds. I'm strong because I hit the weights pretty often. I've got good feet. My strength is as a run blocker. My HS team runs the veer, so I have a lot of experience at run blocking.
TI Playing in Florida, you see good competition every game. Any particular player that stands out in your mind?
WC [Ronald] Boldin at Pahokee. He was supposed to be one of the best line prospects in the state. We went head to head against each other all game. He was good, don't get me wrong. What I realized during that game, though, was that I'm just as good as all the guys who are getting on the cover of magazines. I felt like I handled him pretty good.
TI Finally, when do you expect to make a decision?
WC If I find a school I like, then I'll commit on the spot. I'd like to take all my visits though.
QUICK FACTS: Willie says he's academically qualified. He has a 2.5 GPA and a 900 SAT. His visit list follows: Alabama on 1/10. Missouri 1/15. Georgia 1/17. FSU 1/24. Willie wears number 77 in HS.
