Stories

Excited About Playing For Tide!

Brandon Greer remembers the excitement of the night in 1994 when Alabama played Georgia. Greer was an eighth grader and was travelling with the West Brook Junior Varsity team.

"We were all listening to the game on the radio," recalls Greer. "It didn't sound like Alabama was going to win."

But with less than two minutes remaining, Tide placekicker Michael Proctor had a chance to give Alabama a come-from-behind victory.

"When he hit the field goal everyone was jumping up and down," Greer says.

Four years later, Greer experienced that same kind of excitement the night Tide assistant coach Charlie Harbison offered him a scholarship.

"I was at a loss of words," Greer says. "The only thing that I could get out of my mouth was 'yes.' It's one of those things that's almost too good to be true."

Ready to Go to Alabama

Over the next few months Brandon Greer will have to make some big adjustments.

His high school, West Brook Christian, has an enrollment of less than 500. Alabama's enrollment is over 15,000.

West Brook plays on the Class 1-A level, the lowest in Alabama. Next season he'll be playing on college football's highest level.

At West Brook, Greer played in front crowds of 1,500 fans. Next season 85,000 will be in the stands, and millions will watch on national television.

"Occasionally, I think about how much of an adjustment it will be for me," Greer says. "But I won't be intimidated. I'm ready to go to Alabama."

A Scouting Report on Brodie Croyle

West Brook Christian quarterback Brodie Croyle, son of former Alabama star John Croyle, is just a sophomore, but his legend is already approaching that of Tyler Watts.

Brodie passed for over 3,000 yards last season. His primary target was Brandon Greer.

"He's got good leadership skills and a very strong arm," Greer says. "He can throw the ball over 70 yards in the air. The only thing that he needs is to develop a little touch on the ball."

Legend has it that Croyle is 6'4 and 200 pounds, but Greer says that Croyle is closer to 6'2 ½ and 185.

High School Flashback

It was in the second round of the 1997 playoffs. With only 1:30 left, West Brook Christian scored a touchdown to pull within one point of Courtland. Would they kick the extra-point and send the game into overtime? Or would they go for two?

"We lined up to kick the point," recalls Brandon Greer. "But we faked it."

Greer took off from his left-end spot and circled behind the line toward the right.

"The holder just flipped the ball to me," Greer says. "There were two guys waiting for me at the goalline. I split them perfectly and landed in the end zone. I'll never forget that play."

West Brook won 15-14.
