SBR Scouting Report

Legitmate 6'5" to 6'6" height. Very good speed and quickness as a pass rusher off the edge. Will get much bigger and stronger on a college strength and conditioning program. It would be interesting to give Leslie a look at tight end. Projects as a rush end.

[Observation: senior game film.]

Thompson Landed Him Twice!

Leslie Williams chose Alabama for one reason.

"Coach Lance Thompson," Williams says. "He's the coolest man I've ever known."

Williams committed to play for Thompson twice, once when Thompson was the defensive line coach at Georgia Tech, and later when Thompson joined the Alabama staff.

"He was the major reason that I committed to Tech," Williams says. "And he was the main reason that I ended up choosing Alabama. I like his coaching style."

Near the end of last season Williams committed to Georgia Tech. But a short time later, Tech's admissions office notified him that he did not meet their entrance requirements. That left Williams and his family disillusioned with the recruiting process.

Williams doesn't like to discuss the ordeal. He'll only say that his loyalty was always with Thompson.

"He recruited me for a long time and was very honest," Williams says. "He stayed with me until the end."

Tide Gets A Good One

Williams is one of the South's top defensive ends. Last season he made 93 tackles and 25 sacks.

"I look for him to be an All-American and end up playing on Sundays," says Stone Mountain Coach Bill Harris.

Williams has the ability to star at several positions in college, but his 42 sacks over the past two seasons indicate that his future is at defensive end.

"He could play defensive end, tight end, or linebacker," Harris says. "But he has so much speed coming off the edge as a pass rusher. There's no question that he has the ability to take it to the next level [NFL]."

Quick Facts

Williams was a four-year starter in high school. He began his career at South Mountain High School in Phoenix, AZ. Following his freshman year, he transferred to Stone Mountain.

His father, Leslie Sr., and his uncle Paul Williams both played at Arizona State.

He says that he patterns his game after former Tennessee star Leonard Little.

His most memorable play in high school was when he blocked a FG against Thompson HS with three seconds left in the game to send the game into overtime. His team won.

He was recruited by most schools in the SEC and the ACC. He made official visits to Alabama, Georgia and Georgia Tech.

"Am I excited about going to play for Alabama?" he asks. "Heck yes, I'm excited!"

Note: Special thanks goes to Tom Culpepper of Southeastern Blue-Chip Report for interviewing Williams for this profile.
